Summer of 2015.
Some of the top clubs in the world set their sights on a young Dutch sensation plying his trade for PSV Eindhoven. He was a 21 yr-old who was Eredivisie's top goalscorer playing in the wings and carried PSV to their first title since 2008.
His name you ask? Memphis Depay.

Manchester United and their chief executive Ed Woodward forked out 31 million pounds for the man and managed to get him. He was handed the famous no.7 shirt of Manchester United. What followed was a disastrous 18 month period for both the player and the club. Memphis managed only 16 Premier League appearances scoring just twice for the Red Devils in that period. United eventually gave up on their man and sold him to French side Olympique Lyonnais in January 2017.
Depay has since got his career back on track in France. Memphis has made 32 appearances and has had 27 goal contributions in that time for Lyon. He has scored 15 goals and has had 12 assists from wide positions in Ligue 1 so far. Furthermore, creating 61 chances for the Les Gones. This high output has put the man back in conversation.
Depay said in an interview to EuroSport, “I’m focused on Lyon.
“I live day by day. I get up every morning and thank God for giving me the opportunity to play football.
“If clubs are interested in me, this is certainly not the time to talk about it.
“But AC Milan are a great club and a great team with a great history, but there are a lot of big clubs around the world.”

AC Milan’s director of football Massimiliano Mirabelli has been travelling to France several times to see the Dutchman in action and Gattuso has told the club that the player would be a good upgrade on rumoured to be outgoing players like Fabio Borini and Andre Silva. Fabrizio Romano reports Gattuso and AC Milan chiefs talked about AC Milan’s summer transfer strategies during negotiations for the manager’s contract extension. Gattuso has signed a new contract with AC Milan earlier this month, extending his stay at the club until 2021. AC Milan, however, will have to invest € 40 million to sign Depay in the summer and the Serie A giants are not the only club interested in signing him. Despite that, the Italians will make an attempt to sign the Dutchman in the summer.
